Ceny na týždeň 1/2021

The prices of the “commodity” polymer grades during the week ahead are affected by the following factors:

-BRENT oil price 51.80 USD/barrel, stagnating prices

-NAPHTHA (European) 461.92 USD/t, further rising prices,

-EUR/USD: 1.2255, strong Euro

Contracted monomer pricesin January:

  • Ethylene (C2) contract price +65 EUR/t (860 EUR/t)
  • Propylene (C3) contract price +65 EUR/t (800 EUR/t),
  • Styrene monomer (SM) contract price +108 EUR/t (1,026 EUR/t)

Polymer capacity news

  • Rompetrol LDPE has no planned shutdown until early February
  • Lyondell Basell Bere PP shutdown (350 kt/year capacity),
  • Basell Orlen is building inventories due to 2 months of spring maintenance, so supply is tight.
  • Three-digit polymer price increase
  • Very limited supply of all polymers,
  • Until Epiphany (January 6) most converters are on leave

Oil and NAPHTHA prices in early January are similar to those of 2 weeks ago. As a result, monomer prices have risen signicantly. The January contract price of both ethylene (C2) and propylene (C3) monomers increased by EUR 65 in January. The price of Styrene monomer (SM) increased by 108 euros compared to December.

The heralded Russian imports of PE and PP were practically sold out in the days before Christmas. We do not expect new shipments in January. More serious lots are likely to arrive from Russia in February.

It can already be seen that the supply of all the polymers we examined will be very tight until at least the end of the rst quarter. However, Western European polymer producers think polymer shortage is likely in the rst half of the year. This also seems very likely in Central Europe, especially with regard to Basell Orlen maintenance, which will be in the second quarter. This will have a major impact on the HDPE supply, but is also likely to have an impact on the PP and LDPE supply.

The tight supply in Europe is likely to sustain the upward price trend, and high prices are quite certain. No correction or price reduction can be expected before March. As before March, we do not expect signicant import volumes from outside Europe for any of the commodity polymers.

As one working day had elapsed from this year at the time of writing, there were few price announcements and transactions. The price information provided below is not based on the usual statistical numbers, so it can be considered as the rst January price information.

Polyethylene grades

On the first working day of January, LDPE prices were in the range of € 1,140-1,180/t. So far, price increases of 100-150 €/t have taken place compared to the beginning of December. Due to the shutdown of Rompetrol, the supply situation deteriorated, especially in the SCE and MCE regions. To make matters worse, the largest Central European LDPE producer is also rescheduling orders. After further producer price announcements, the full January price range for contracted customers will be 1,150-1,220 € / t. However, in the spot markets, even higher prices may occur in the second half of the month.

On the first working day of January, HDPE prices ranged from € 1,030 to € 1,130/t in Central Europe. They increased by € 90-120 per ton compared to early December. So far, only one or two producers have published their January prices. Other price announcements are expected only in the second half of the week. It is likely that the price increase will continue. The supply in this case will also be tight in January.

Prices by HDPE grades were as follows:

  • HDPE BM: 1,020-1,150 €/t,
  • HDPE IM: 1,020-1,150 €/t,
  • HDPE FILM: 1,020-1,150€/t
On the first working day of January, most manufacturers had not yet announced their HDPE (100) prices for January. So far, one producer has published its prices, according to which the prices valid for January are 130-160 €/t higher than in December. We expect the full January price range to be 1,180-1,250 €/t.

On the first business day of January, we did not measure an LLDPE transaction. LLDPE C4 prices at the end of December (€ 950-1,080/t) are likely to rise signicantly. The main drivers of the rise are the generally rising PE price level as well as the tight supply. We expect January prices to be in a range of 1,080-1,150 €/t.

As of the first working day in January, producers have not yet published mLLDPE (C6) prices. Prices are expected to rise above the ethylene monomer price increase. Prices are expected in the price range of 1,120-1,290 €/t in January with a tight supply.

Polypropylenes
On the first working day of January, according to the rst price announcements, PPH Raffia prices were in a range of € 1,050 to € 1,150/t, depending on the producer and grade. According to the Serbian producer that works with the cheapest prices, prices are expected to rise further. In the second half of January, the cheapest prices will reach € 1,100. Supply is tight due to strong demand in Central Europe and Turkey. Final prices in January are expected to be in a range of 1,100-1,170 EUR/t.

On the first working day of January, the prices of PPH IM non-special products with low and medium melt ow index were in a range of 1,050 and 1,170 € / t. There have been few price announcements. For products with high melt ow index, we did not receive price information, however, the price is likely to increase by more than € 100 in January. Some Western European producers will try to increase prices by up to 120-150 €/t. We expect the price of PPH with a high melt ow index to be in the price range of € 1,100- 1,230/t. Supply is likely to remain tight, with no signicant imports expected from outside Europe during January.

On the first working day of January, typical PPC prices were in a range of € 1,150 to € 1,250/t in Central Europe. For now, these are the rst offers. Compared to the beginning of December, a price increase of 120-200 €/t can be seen. Grades with high melt ow index are particularly affected. There are very few of these on the market, there is a great shortage of the usual Asian import products. On the rst working day of January, PPR prices were in a range of € 1,120 - € 1,260/t last week. Prices have started to rise sharply, so far we have seen a price increase of 90-120 €/t. However, due to tight supply, further price increases are conceivable in the second half of January.

Polystyrenes
On the first working day of January, no price announcement has yet been made for EPS. We are out of season for now, so it is unlikely that producers will raise their prices signicantly above the change in SM price. EPS prices in January are likely to be in a range of € 1,220-1,340/t.

On the first working day of January, no price announcement has yet been made for GPPS and HIPS. Due to the extremely tight supply, polystyrene producers can increase their prices unscrupulously. A price increase of between 150 and 200 €/t is very likely for both polystyrene grades. GPPS prices expected for January will be in a range of € 1,300-1,450/t. The HIPS prices expected for January will be in a range of 1,380-1,530 €/t. The general PS shortage continues. There may be few imports from outside Europe, which does not signicantly expand supply. Supply is not expected to increase before March.

On the first working day of January, no price announcement has yet been made for natural ABS. During December, prices rose by around € 200. It is likely that this price increase during the month will be extended to January. Thus, ABS prices in early January will be around € 200-250 higher than in early December. The expected price range by the end of this week will be 2,000-2,350 €/t. As producers will not be able to meet customer needs in January either, prices may rise further during January.
